Established in June 2000 on Broadway Market, East London by textile designer maker, Barley Massey, Fabrications has grown into a buzzing maker space focusing on social textiles and creative reuse/repair. Barley has been championing circular design, ‘cradle to cradle’ principles and grassroots initiatives for over 25 years. Alongside her own upcycling practice she and other makers host regular classes and events at Fabrications in textile practices, upcycling and mending. Over the years, Barley has also worked ‘free-range’ on a variety of environmental and waste reduction initiatives with local authorities, social enterprises / charities, corporate settings, public spaces and community events.

Boro (more accurately ‘Boro boro’), meaning ‘rags or tatters’ is the art of repairing fabric using scraps and stitching. Please Bring: An item of clothing you wish to repair, although fabric and threads are provided should you wish to just practice or start on a piece of your very own boro.

To celebrate ‘London Repair Week’, we invite you to our ‘Refresh your Wardrobe’ clothes fixing fiesta! An opportunity to get through your mending pile and fall back in love with your favourite threads, whilst sewcialising in a creative space! There will be needles & threads, sewing machines, overlockers, a ‘pick n mix’ selection of haberdashery, as well as items of clothing pre repaired or upcycled by Barley Massey to inspire and inform.

In this class we’ll look into different design ideas for clothes, from floral to abstract to an intro about embroidering text. We’ll tackle important trouble shooting issues that come with garments that are ‘already-made’ (think sleeves and/or lined garments for example). You’ll be able to use all of the stitches learnt in the morning based on your preference.
