Sustainable Merton is Merton’s local environmental charity, giving residents, groups, organisations and businesses the opportunity to take positive action to make our borough a happier, healthier and more sustainable community, now and for future generations.
Through community-led projects that integrate both environmental and social goals, we are broadening the reach and benefits of taking climate action. Our projects cover 5 key areas of sustainable living: Air Quality, Energy, Food Response, Growing Spaces and Waste.
The Wheel is our project for reducing waste and building a circular economy in Merton. A circular economy moves away from throwaway culture to create a community that reuses and shares resources, keeping useful materials in circulation for as long as possible. This eliminates waste but also saves money and protects natural habitats from the extraction of new materials. A circular economy is a tool for tackling the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and pollution, all at the same time!
Our website for The Wheel is a digital hub for exploring waste reduction options in Merton. We also host Repair Cafes and community engagement workshops in furniture upcycling and sewing skills for waste reduction. Our Preloved Studio is a textiles waste reduction hub for community projects and home to resident businesses who integrate textiles waste reduction into their work.
