Plastic pots, tubs and trays

Recycling locator

What plastic pots, tubs and trays can be recycled at home?

Not all councils will collect these for recycling, so check with your local council, but if they do, normally they’ll collect:

  • Pots (e.g. yogurt, soup)
  • Tubs (e.g. margarine, ice cream)
  • Trays or punnets (e.g. raw or cooked meat trays; take-away trays; fruit & veg trays)
  • Chocolate and biscuit tubs and trays
  • Brown plant pots

The following can't be recycled at home:

  • Any trays or tubs made from black plastic
  • Medicine blister packs
  • Film lids from pots or trays
  • Laminated pouches (e.g. cat food and coffee pouches that spring back when you try and scrunch them)
  • Paint pots – recycle these at your local recycling centre
  • Plastic toys – these are currently not recyclable
  • Expanded polystyrene (e.g. packaging inserts)

How to recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays

  • Give them a quick rinse. Left-over food residue can ruin your other recycling
  • Don’t worry about removing labels and lids but make sure to take off any plastic film and as this needs to go in your rubbish bin
